NFPA 30, Flammable and Combustible Liquids Code, applies to the storage, handling, and use of flammable and combustible liquids.  Used by manufacturers, producers, distributors, and end users, it provides fundamental safeguards for liquid storage, handling, and use.

NFPA 30 establishes criteria for fire protection system design, particularly for storage situations. As part of an overall fire and explosion prevention and risk control program, foam fire extinguishing systems might be used at a storage, processing, refinery, or chemical facility. Such systems must meet NFPA 11, Standard for Low-, Medium-, and High-Expansion Foam, and NFPA 16, Standard for the Installation of Foam-Water Sprinkler and Foam-Water Spray Systems, as appropriate. Specific storage arrangements might require foam sprinkler protection. For example, flammable liquid warehouses which are considered “protected” have the option of using foam sprinkler protection for palletized or rack storage arrangements. The protection criteria are based on full scale fire test data. Closed head AFFF sprinkler systems protecting these hazards must be designed in accordance with NFPA 16, which establishes the necessary foam system tests and inspections. Foam water sprinkler systems must provide foam solution at the minimum concentration with as few as four sprinklers operating.
