NFPA 418

NFPA 418, Standard for Heliports, specifies the minimum requirements for fire protection for heliports and rooftop hangars. It does not apply to ground-level helicopter hangars, which are required to comply with NFPA 409, Standard on Aircraft Hangars. Temporary landing sites and emergency evacuation facilities are not intended to be subject to this standard. NFPA 418 establishes minimum fire safety requirements for operation at heliports for the protection of persons, aircraft, and other property.

NFPA 418 requires foam protection for rooftop landing pads and rooftop hangars. Rooftop landing pads typically require either fixed discharge foam outlets (such as fixed stationary or oscillating monitors) or foam hose lines for protection. Both require flow testing; fixed discharge devices must demonstrate 95% coverage. Rooftop hangars are to be protected in accordance with NFPA 409 Standard on Aircraft Hangars. Inspection, test, and maintenance must be performed in accordance with NFPA 25, Standard for the Inspection, Test and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems, which includes requirements for monthly inspections and annual testing of proportioning and other equipment.
